Rangehood Cleaning for Bond Inspections — What Perth Property Managers Check

Published May 2025  |  4 min read

Rangehood filters accumulate grease invisibly over months of cooking — until a property manager pulls them out at your exit inspection and holds them up. It's a quick, easy deduction that catches a lot of Perth tenants off guard. Here's how to handle it.

What Gets Checked

Property managers inspect the rangehood thoroughly:

  • Mesh or baffle filters — removed and checked for grease buildup
  • Interior of the rangehood housing — accumulated grease and cooking residue
  • Exterior housing and underside — grease and marks
  • Fan blades if accessible

How to Clean Rangehood Filters

Dishwasher Method (Easiest)

Most metal mesh and baffle filters are dishwasher-safe. Place them on the bottom rack, run a hot cycle, and they come out clean. This works well for moderate grease buildup.

Soaking Method

For heavier grease, fill the sink or a large tub with very hot water and add a cup of dishwashing liquid plus half a cup of baking soda. Submerge the filters and leave for 30–60 minutes. Scrub with a stiff brush, rinse, and dry before replacing. For very stubborn buildup, add a cup of white vinegar to the soak.

Degreaser Spray

Commercial degreaser sprays (available from hardware stores) applied directly to the filter, left to dwell for 10 minutes, then scrubbed and rinsed are effective for heavy carbonised grease.

Cleaning the Rangehood Interior

Spray a degreaser or diluted dish soap solution into the housing, leave briefly, then wipe with a cloth. Multiple wipe-throughs are usually needed for older rangehoods. Pay attention to the area directly above the burners — this is where grease accumulates most.

Carbon Filters

Some ducted rangehoods use carbon filters rather than metal mesh. These cannot be cleaned — they need to be replaced. Carbon filters typically last 3–6 months with regular cooking. Check whether your rangehood has one and whether it needs replacing before your exit inspection.
